Deep breath...

The massive kitchen island unit -
good job they didn't drop it!

Having had a good rant to Mum earlier on this evening about the general lack of progress with the building work on the Barn I'm going to try not to bang on about it here. Suffice to say that the much anticipated wow factor of having the new fitted furniture and kitchen worktops was massively over shadowed by the rubbish everywhere and the inability of anyone other than Sharps to finish a task once started. This week is crunch time - I just hope everyone understands that time is running out if we have any chance of making the completion date. That's enough - I don't want to think about it anymore!

So what else has been happening? The kids are completely back into the swing of school and are now very comfortable with their routine of twice weekly covid tests and, although they don't like it, wearing a mask all day. Despite all the disruption they have engaged really well and are clearly enjoying being back with their friends (even if Abi says she'd prefer to be home schooled!). Of course they'll just have settled in when it will be time for the Easter holidays - already! For the girls this means also saying goodbye to their friends, They've both said they are ok with this but I think when the time comes there will be tears - they have some lovely friends and it will be hard to say goodbye.

Also finding it hard is Nanny Di and Alby.  They came over on Saturday (officially to look after Izzy even though she needs no looking after) while we were in Taunton and were waiting for us when we got back with the kettle on and a Nanny Di Victoria Sponge special. We will miss them as well - but they have plenty of time and love a drive out so hopefully they'll learn the route to Taunton and come and see us often.

I'm very conscious it will be hard for me as well. As I'm walking at the moment I'm thinking of the routes I want to do in case I don't manage to do them again before we go. I'm also thinking about who I'd like to see before we leave - even if this is much more difficult to achieve than a walk with the lock down restrictions. I've managed to meet a few people for walks - something that is allowed - and of course I can see Zsara as we are in a bubble so I'm cramming in as much of that as possible while I can. I will miss her a lot and I can't imagine finding someone close by (other than family) who understand me as well as she does. Never mind - we aren't that far away from each other and we will have to find a special place mid way to meet up regularly.

On the plus side though I'm also thinking about all the things we will be able to do soon - including being near Kerrie when baby arrives. She had a bit of a scare this week when she woke in severe pain. Ryan has been away for nearly 2 months so it was just her at home and after the pain didn't go away she ended up calling an ambulance. She was taken into hospital as a precaution and tests showed no issues - they think she either had trapped wind or the baby was lying on a nerve but she said she's never known pain like it... roll on when we can be closer to give her a hug and reassure her!

Right. Got to go - big family TV night tonight - Top Gear followed by the (much anticipated) new series of Line of Duty... can't wait and if I'm not quick the dog will have stolen my place!!

Trying to focus on the view, rather than the mess!

Diary management!

This part of the summer is definitely typified by me trying to remember who is supposed to be where and when. Abi likes to be off doing something with someone while Izzy is happier to know she's close to home and so for the last week they've gone their separate ways. Abi has been down in Somerset making the most of Ben and Laurie being about. From what I can tell she's having a lovely time. Apart from the covert phone call one evening to tell me she was 'starving'  (Mum was cooking for the hordes and so it had been delayed), I've barely heard from her. The few calls I have had have very quickly ended in "can I go now" like I'm making her speak to me! Today she switches from Mum and Dads to a night or two with Kerrie - not sure who is more excited! Izzy didn't want to be away for that long so she opted not to go. She's very conscious that Abi and Laurie are joined at the hip when together and Ben has his own things he wants to do so she ...

Sunny days

As we stare down the barrel of a second national lockdown I'm not ashamed to report that I'm feeling pretty angry about the whole thing. So much for 'world beating test and trace' systems and the ability to get super granular with the way in which we respond to coronavirus. I get the fact that nationally we are seeing rates of infection and (apparently) hospital numbers rising, but the data says that in our neck of the woods we have 3(3!) cases per 100,000 people and so I cannot see why we should have to lockdown in the same way that Bolton needs to when their rates are at 190! The average for England is 16 so surely we aren't at a point where we need to take the same approach everywhere? Part of the reason I'm ranting so much is that after 2 weeks back at school I'm finally getting my Izzy back again. She has thrived with the social interactions school gives her and (although she complains about it) has loved being back. Instead of the morose, withdrawn gir...

Blame the jet stream...

Shed prep, with oversight from the dogs Apparently we have the jet stream to blame for the truly awful weather we are having right now. I blame our builder - if he had got his act together and sorted out Glenn's workshop roof as he promised, sods law the sun would be shining from dawn to dusk. Instead it's still pouring every half hour and Glenn is constantly worried about how much water is coming though the roof / walls / floor etc. Apparently he 'literally' just needs to put the ridge on the top and the gully down the side and it will all be fixed. We are literally at the point of wanting to do him some actual bodily harm. The moment he disappears the better. This week he was also literally going to clad the office ("done") and has failed everyday to turn up and do it (which in my book is literally not "done"). He was also going to have Gary come and finish the electrics (not done), whack down the paving slabs (not done), render the last of the bri...
