And... stop!

So that's it - the work year has finished, as has the school year, and we are officially all on holiday.... poor Glenn, we'll be in his space for 3 whole weeks!!

This week was supposed to be an easy glide path for me but it was nothing like that, I ended up working right up to the wire - something that is to be expected I guess given the circumstances. I did carve out one day to catch up with a few people but even this was a whirlwind of activity, with meetings in Reading in the morning, followed  by London at lunchtime with the plan of being back in Newbury by 4:30 to meet Glenn and the kids for dentist appointments and then on to a quick pizza and the senior school carol concert.  All was going well until there was a fatality on the line and so all trains were halted and I got home 2 hours later than planned. Oh well, kids were pleased not to have to go to the church and sing, and given half the girls then immediately went down with a sickness bug we may have dodged a  bullet there.

Friday dawned and I was back in London while Izzy  went to school and Abi had special dispensation to stay back so she could go straight to Angie's. School was only scheduled for half a day and I couldn't see the point really when the best of the weather was on Friday and they certainly weren't going to do any lessons!

The whole riding thing is a tricky one. Abi loves being there, but only really when at least one of her friends is also there. There are a gang of them that have become close and so it's not the same if they're not together. They also seem to do far less riding than they do stable slave and so I've lost the plot on whether we pay or not now, not least I'm pretty sure we paid a small fortune for a monthly riding weekend and, between the weather and the weekends she's ended up working rather than riding, I'm pretty sure we've not had our money's worth. Add to that the fact that Abi tends to come home full of talk about leaving school at 16 to do an apprenticeship there (fuelled  by Angie I'm sure, she goes through stable apprentices more quickly than we do cars), I'd be happy of we could find a happy alternative. In the meantime I keep repeating the mantra "I must not worry about things that are 3+ years in the future and may never happen!"

So this week we are off to Somerset and a few days away in a cottage by the railway. I'm looking forward to walking on the beach, seeing family and generally relaxing. We are taking Bertie (first time ever!) who has picked up a timely tummy bug so I'm paranoid he's going to disgrace himself  - nothing is ever easy!!!

Snow!

After a beautiful day of sunshine yesterday, today it snowed... but more of that in a minute. Yesterday actually felt like a day of much progress. Despite Covid we managed to arrange a visit to Taunton School to have a look around with the girls and to meet the Headmaster. This was a massive relief as I had got to the point of thinking we would have to accept a place without ever stepping foot inside the school. In the end we had a very comprehensive, if a little deserted, tour of the school and the kids loved it, as did we. There may even be a small chance they might squeeze us in if we are there by the summer term - that is of course if the kids are back into school by then. The other news was that I managed to speak to Mr &Mrs Tucker - the people buying our house - and we tentatively agreed that we will try and complete during the Easter holidays which could have us moving in the third week of April. This does require everyone to have got all of what they need done, and that of ...

Busy, busy, busy

Full English brunch for these two! Life is VERY busy and I don't feel like we have stopped for weeks (or is that months?) It seems like the 'to-do' list is endless and while I know we don't have to do it all at once, I have taken on the unenviable task of trying to get the Muppet to finish all the work he promised / we have paid for and that has been like pushing a mountain of water up a very steep hill. We've got to the point where I think we have got all of what we are likely to get and the rest we'd rather finish ourselves anyway. The electric gates are clearly a work of his imagination based on the gates / the electric cables he spec'd and the cheapo motor mechanism - there is no way they'll work so we have decided to not bother and source proper gates that do the job and look better as well. Knowing that we are almost at a point where we sever the ties feels very liberating. Looking back this last 6 months has been incredibly stressful and just didn...

Freya

So I write this with tears pouring down my face as I get ready to take Freya to the vets for the last time. We've just had a long cuddle and she's looking at me with those big trusting eyes - as far as she is concerned it's a normal day and I'm the person who keeps her safe, protects her from the world and makes sure there is a steady supply of porridge every morning. My darling Freya - so sweet in the house but so anxious and volatile when out of it. We've known this day has been coming for a while. We've had various run ins, all near misses because I've managed to hold her when we've met other dogs and she's gone nuts, but there are all the other things which I have tried to block out... The most recent of which was her snapping at Izzy when she bent down to give her a cuddle. Freya was asleep admittedly, but even so. I made the excuse to myself that her legs had been a bit sore that day and so it's because she might have been in pain rat...
