Where's your homework?!?

Sunday evening, phone goes ping and it's one of the Mums in Izzy's class asking if anyone has the Latin prep for the test tomorrow. "What test?!?" I ask Izzy, "Have you learnt yours?" "Oh, I don't know where my sheet is" she says, like that's OK! So I duly print it out (thank goodness for someone having mentioned it) and within 2 mins she has run through it and is pretty much word perfect - I guess that's the verbal bias kicking in then. Abi also has a test on Tuesday - science - and also seems not to know where her sheet is to revise. Why do neither of my children see the need to bring these things home - it's not for want of us telling them how important it is!

This weekend Abi has been off hunting at Angies and so Glenn whisked her out of school on Friday a bit early (missing games not science) and so as to miss the traffic. They've developed a bit of a routine for this - Glenn now takes her on the back of the bike and she absolutely loves it. She wears my protective clothes (helmet and all), all of which fit her as well as they fit me, and she plugs her music into the headset and settles down for the hour or so it takes them to get there. She loves it so much that she bugs him pretty much every weekend to go out for a ride... she is definitely her father's daughter. I did worry about the risk but it's a safe bike, he's a very safe rider and as he said - he's hardly going to do something that puts her or him in danger. I now worry much more about how much she enjoys it - doesn't bode well for future hobbies!

So while Abi was away riding, Izzy made the most of having us all to herself. She was at a sleepover with Effie on Friday straight from school which stretched in Saturday lunchtime, or Saturday afternoon by the time I had picked up and stayed for a cup of coffee and a good long chat. As ever the subject was schools. At least we can say we are ahead of many of the parents with knowing the basics of what needs to be thought through- some are still finding their way through the foothills (as we were this time last year with Abi) and it's all a bit daunting still.

Effie has a pony, Sugar, so Izzy's sleepover consisted of a ride and copious amounts of trampolining and gymnastics. Since last week Izzy has now perfected her backbend kickover (which is pretty impressive) and her handstands are now putting anyone from my yoga class to shame - why aren't we all as bendy as her?!? I have to video her 10 times a day - at least we have evidence of how far she has come.

In other news I had my aligners fitted on Monday so I have spent the week lisping and trying to get into the routine of having a brace again! The decision to get them was partly cosmetic but more so because my bottom teeth are slowly becoming more and more crooked and as they do get harder to clean (the cosmetic bit). The aligners are made of clear plastic and are a bit like 2 ultra thin gum guards. I have to wear them for 22 hours a day and they are changed every 2 weeks. For the first 3 days my whole jaw ached and it was almost as bad taking them out as having them in. Now it's all settled down and my main challenge is trying to achieve 22 hours of wear. It sounds easy but given you need to clean your teeth after eating before putting them back on, and you can't wear them for any type of eating or drinking (other than water), it's not as easy as it sounds. What it does mean is that my teeth have never been so clean and that I'm eating hardly anything between meals and limited hot drinks. So crash detox / diet as well as straight teeth - watch this space for the slimmed down, straight teethed me (check back this time next year...)!

Cough, cough

Izzy - can't do a photo without rude finger gestures It's fair to say that the last couple of weeks have been rough. I managed to get the cough Mum had a while back and it has been horrible! Both Dad and Glenn seemed to get a very mild version of it but Mum and I got the full dose and I can safely say that it has been a stark reminder of just how bad a viral infection can be. It also illustrates the whole Covid experience - some get it worse than others. For me it has meant that for over 2 weeks I have had the worst cough which has left me unable to sleep properly. I still can't sleep lying down fully, and have to be propped up on pillows on my back which is not my favoured sleeping position! It has also meant that Glenn has spent the last 10 days in the spare room because I have been coughing so badly he is unable to sleep in the same room. Thank goodness we didn't all have it - we'd have shaken the house to its foundations! It has also meant that I have been exhau

It's beginning to feel a bit like Christmas...

I was sure I write the blog last week.... but, it seems another 2 weeks have flown by and now we are staring down the barrel of the Christmas holidays and the end of the year! Currently it's all about Doug and what a star he has proved to be so far. He has now been with us for 3 weeks and he is (so far, I keep thinking at some point it will change) a pretty chilled out puppy. As a second dog he has been thrown in at the deep end and has been to Sunday lunch with Alan & Sarah (which he loved), socialised at home with friends and their dogs, met babies (he loved Elsie) and started to go for walks. The walking has been a bit different to our previous approaches with new dogs. In the past we have ventured out carefully, making sure that our new baby only walks a short distance so they can experience all the new sights and sounds. Doug's first walk was after Sunday lunch last week, just him and 8 other dogs for bout 45 mins - he loved it! In our defence we didn't let him wal

March!

Betty kisses! Blink and 3 weeks have sped by - just like that! The good news is that it's a) beginning to feel like Spring (well, some of the time), and b) that means we are nearly through year end at work which is a blessed relief - that last couple of weeks have been pretty intense.  Although it's been busy, we have a good few weeks, including a lovely weekend where Glenn and I managed to get away on our own for the first time in 2 years - amazing! We only went to a cottage in Devon for 2 nights but the cottage was really nicely arranged and we settled in very quickly. We did have to adjust a bit t the fact that it was in the middle of nowhere - us and sheep - but Glenn had Wi-Fi and the rugby and I had plenty of time to walk so we were both happy. Kerrie and Elsie came and stayed with the kids so they had a great time also, with lots of time to realise that a young baby might look like fun but it's a lot of hard work! Betty and Doug went to Mum and Dad's. They surviv
