Back to work panic!!

Back to work and back to school - hey ho, where has the summer gone? While Glenn can't wait for peace and tranquillity to be resumed, I'm feeling a bit more reserved about the idea of going back to the rat-race. The last few nights I haven't slept as well as normal, not struggling to fall asleep but waking up in the middle of the night having had dreams that could be attributed to work worries. Alternatively it could simply be that I haven't had enough to do and so my brain is going off on its own little journeys - who knows. I do know that once I get back into it, it will be fine, it always is, but for the moment I'm not looking forward to the pace of life speeding up as of tomorrow morning. The good news is that as of this week I start my 4 day week so that's something to look forward to. I always knew I'd have to be a bit flexible on having a regular Monday off, particularly in the start as I get my diary sorted around meetings which have been in for a long while. It would be lovely to have got off to a good start this week, but fore the next 2 weeks it will be a Friday non-working day rather than a Monday. I did say no this week to someone asking "could I just do this one Monday..." - if I don't hold the line I will be taking a pay cut for no gain and that is not the idea!

The girls have had a great week with me being at home - we have single handedly funded our riding stables for the next year by taking the ponies out almost every day for a hack. They've grown in confidence as we have racked up the hours and Abi's fear of JuJu (having been thrown off him 3 times in quick succession on one pony day) has receded and today she rode him in a much more relaxed way. I get to walk or run alongside them for the hour we are out so it ticks my boxes in lots of ways. We've managed to get in some swimming as well - in fact its been a pretty active week - just what I love.

We compared notes on favourite holidays this year. Izzy's is Devon, as is mine if we are looking at time away from the house. Abi's is (of course) riding. Glenn probably enjoyed his trips cycling most - he didn't offer an answer to the question! The best thing however for me has been having 2 weeks at home - what a lovely luxury and way nicer than being away. I must remember that in the future.

With all this free time this week we also had Mum and Dad come and visit. It was lovely to show
them the house and all we've achieved. The sun shone (again, we really have had the most amazing weather in the 2 weeks I've had off) and we sat outside and made the most of the summer sunshine. My pudding wasn't perfect but it passed the basic thumbs up from everybody who tried it so I'll chalk that up as success.

Just checking photo's for this week's blog and they definitely all seem to be off Izzy. Abi is a bit more camera shy, unless of course it's selfies with the dogs - I could post a 100 versions of the same picture of her with either Freya or Bertie - here's just one to even up the score...

Diary management!

This part of the summer is definitely typified by me trying to remember who is supposed to be where and when. Abi likes to be off doing something with someone while Izzy is happier to know she's close to home and so for the last week they've gone their separate ways. Abi has been down in Somerset making the most of Ben and Laurie being about. From what I can tell she's having a lovely time. Apart from the covert phone call one evening to tell me she was 'starving'  (Mum was cooking for the hordes and so it had been delayed), I've barely heard from her. The few calls I have had have very quickly ended in "can I go now" like I'm making her speak to me! Today she switches from Mum and Dads to a night or two with Kerrie - not sure who is more excited! Izzy didn't want to be away for that long so she opted not to go. She's very conscious that Abi and Laurie are joined at the hip when together and Ben has his own things he wants to do so she ...

Sunny days

As we stare down the barrel of a second national lockdown I'm not ashamed to report that I'm feeling pretty angry about the whole thing. So much for 'world beating test and trace' systems and the ability to get super granular with the way in which we respond to coronavirus. I get the fact that nationally we are seeing rates of infection and (apparently) hospital numbers rising, but the data says that in our neck of the woods we have 3(3!) cases per 100,000 people and so I cannot see why we should have to lockdown in the same way that Bolton needs to when their rates are at 190! The average for England is 16 so surely we aren't at a point where we need to take the same approach everywhere? Part of the reason I'm ranting so much is that after 2 weeks back at school I'm finally getting my Izzy back again. She has thrived with the social interactions school gives her and (although she complains about it) has loved being back. Instead of the morose, withdrawn gir...

Blame the jet stream...

Shed prep, with oversight from the dogs Apparently we have the jet stream to blame for the truly awful weather we are having right now. I blame our builder - if he had got his act together and sorted out Glenn's workshop roof as he promised, sods law the sun would be shining from dawn to dusk. Instead it's still pouring every half hour and Glenn is constantly worried about how much water is coming though the roof / walls / floor etc. Apparently he 'literally' just needs to put the ridge on the top and the gully down the side and it will all be fixed. We are literally at the point of wanting to do him some actual bodily harm. The moment he disappears the better. This week he was also literally going to clad the office ("done") and has failed everyday to turn up and do it (which in my book is literally not "done"). He was also going to have Gary come and finish the electrics (not done), whack down the paving slabs (not done), render the last of the bri...
